The Pearl

There are many events in ‘The Pearl’ but one important event is the discovery of the pearl itself by Kino. Kino and Juana with their sick child, Coyotito, make many trips to go pearl fishing and this trip is particularly special in the search for the pearl that would make a difference in their financial situation.

The pearl they actually found causes the story to take a different turn in their life. This discovery of the pearl affects the lives of kino and Juana as it reflects their hopes, dreams and desires. But it is interesting to note that this same discovery of the pearl affects the thoughts and actions of the greedy doctor, the priest, the pearl buyers and the trackers. Even their neighbours in the village imagine what they would do if they had the pearl.

The pearl should have brought financial security for the family and a bright future for Coyotito but what happens is that greed grips everyone and their personalities change. A happy home is destroyed. The family is threatened by wicked men who would not hesitate to kill and Coyotito was the fatal victim. That is the tragedy that the discovery of the pearl brings.
