TIMES : SPM2009 Spot Questions - English (PAPER II)

7. The following are the novels studied in the literature component in English language.

Jungle of Hope - Keris Mas
The Pearl - John Steinbeck
The Return - K.S.Maniam

Choose any one of the novels above and answer the question below.

Describe an event that you think is important in the novel you have studied. Relate its importance to the story. (15 marks)

The Pearl

There are many events in ‘The Pearl’ but one important event is the discovery of the pearl itself by Kino. Kino and Juana with their sick child, Coyotito, make many trips to go pearl fishing and this trip is particularly special in the search for the pearl that would make a difference in their financial situation.

The pearl they actually found causes the story to take a different turn in their life. This discovery of the pearl affects the lives of kino and Juana as it reflects their hopes, dreams and desires. But it is interesting to note that this same discovery of the pearl affects the thoughts and actions of the greedy doctor, the priest, the pearl buyers and the trackers. Even their neighbours in the village imagine what they would do if they had the pearl.

The pearl should have brought financial security for the family and a bright future for Coyotito but what happens is that greed grips everyone and their personalities change. A happy home is destroyed. The family is threatened by wicked men who would not hesitate to kill and Coyotito was the fatal victim. That is the tragedy that the discovery of the pearl brings.

The President,

The Principal,
SMK Perwira,
42500 Banting,
Selangor. 22 January 2009

Dear Sir,
Complaint about the School Canteen
With reference to the above, I, as the President of the Student Council, would like to complain about our school canteen. The Student Council conducted a survey recently, and we are very unhappy with the condition and service provided by the canteen operator.

2. When the students complaint about the food which was not tasty, we visited the canteen. We bought a plate of fried rice but it was not fresh. We then noticed that the food was not covered. There were flies sitting on the food and flying in the shelves.

3. Next, we would like to bring up the prices. A few of us had bought the same food but the canteen operator charged all of us different prices. We wanted to check the actual price but a price list was not displayed. This means that the canteen operator can charge as she pleases as there was no price list for the students tom compare the price.

4. Thirdly, I would like to complain about the canteen floor. The floor was dirty. It looked like had never been swept..The floor was also slippery with with remnants of food strewn all over and stepped on. Thus the reasons for the constant accidents among students during their recess at the canteen.

5. The next point is about the environment. It was not a hygienic environment with stray cats moving among the students’ legs in the eating area, eating the remnants of food strewn under the tables. Students had also talked about seeing cockroaches and flies in the canteen’s cupboards.

6. Finally, the students were unhappy with the utensils used by the canteen operator. The styrofoam cups, plates and the plastic spoons were not only brittle but also not environmental friendly.

7. During our meeting, the Council has a few suggestions for your consideration in this matter. The food must be fresh, kept warm and covered at all times. She should use plates, cups and spoons that can be washed and reused. The price list should be prominently displayed.

The environment should be improved such that students would feel more comfortable having their recesss in the canteen.

We hope you will give your consideration to our suggestions and take appropriate action regarding this matter. Thank you.

Yours faithfully,
______________

Student Council.

ANSWER

a) It was a calm evening. I looked across the lake, enjoying the sight of the ripples splashing softly across the surface. Seated on the wooden bench, I sighed loudly as I thought of the worries that were sitting so heavily on my shoulders.

“What’s your problems? Do you want to talk about it?”a stranger’s voice which came from my left made me startled. I looked at the man sitting on the other end of the bench. I had not even been aware that he had came and sat there. I looked closely at him. The right half of his face was badly disfigured because of burns. He appeared to be about 60 years old and had a thin oval face and calm, wise eyes. His right hand dangled uselessly at his side. His deformity aside, I could see kindness and understanding in his expression. I hesitated for a moment and then replied bitterly,”My father hates me.”

“Hmm....your father must be scolding you all the time, right?” the stranger said quietly.

”He wants you to get better marks in your exam and stop meeting those boys who are school dropouts,”the stranger said, and I looked at him in shock. “Yeah, he was very angry about my bad grades. I know that I have been a bit naughty, playing truant with those boys in my school. The form teacher called my father and complained to him.My dad was furious. He told me that he was going to deprive me of the motorbike he had given me until i get better grades. He doesn’t love me anymore.” I started crying as I spoke.

He was silent for a while and let me cry. After a few minutes, he started talking.

”Let me tell you a story. I had a son like you, who was rebellious. I tried to advise him but he thought that I did not love him. One day, he brought his friends to play firecrackers in my house.I told him that it was dangerous but he just refused to listen. I went out for a short while. The whole house caught fire and my son was trapped in it. His friends managed to rush out of the house but he was left inside, screaming for help. I rushed into the house and managed to pulled him out of the burning house. I was glad he was safe," the stranger said.

“What about you? What happened?” I asked curiously.

He said, ”A heavy beam fell on me and I was trapped there. The neighbours came and managed to put out the fire with pails of water. When they found me, they thought that I was dead. But I loved my son and didn’t want to die until I had seen him through his education and make sure he had a successful future.”

“You were ready to sacrifice yourself in the terrible fire for your son? You must really love your son,” I said to him in wonder.

“So does every father in this world,”he replied.”They want their children to achieve excellent results and have a bright future. Your father doesn’t know how to advise you anymore. But don’t ever say that he hates you!”

“I think you are right. He has never scolded me before. It was only after I started mixing with those bad hats and getting low grades that he started to scold me. I think that I should thank you for showing me the right path. I’ll go and apologise to him and promise him I’ll be good,” I said.

“Go and make your father happy. And remember, I’ll be here every day around this time. Come and talk to me if you have any problems,” the stranger said.

“I don’t even know your name,” I exclaimed in embarrassment.

“Lokman. Call me Uncle Man, that’s what everyone here calls me,” he answered.

And that was how Uncle Man began to play an important part in my life. He was always there, rain or shine on the bench by the lake. He would listen to my problems and advise me. I faced many trials and tribulations in my life but all those became small challenges after I talked to Uncle Man. Today, I am a successful professional, and I have two men to thank for my success – my father and Uncle Man.

b) With the introduction of the internet, the world has become a smaller place. Buying and selling items through the internet can be done in seconds. At the click of the mouse and in the blink of an eye, billions of dollars are exchanged via banks, from country to country. In the face of such excitement, one wonders whether the conventional method of shopping will continue for long.

I feel that although internet shopping is slowly becoming popular, it cannot take over the conventional method of shopping. Firstly, human beings are complex creatures. It is very difficult to satisfy them. They need to look at products, and feel and try them before they decided to buy. They will go frm one shop to another to compare prices, and ask for opinions before they finally decide on a product to buy. This cannot be done through internet shopping. When the goods are delivered, you have to accept them whether you like them or not.

Internet shopping does not allow for easy refunds and repairs. When you look at a product on the internet, you do not know how efficiently it will function. If you discover it does not work when you received it, you will have to go through a tedious process to return it. If you have bought the product from a shop, it would be easier for you to have it repaired or replaced or to get a refund.

Furthermore, when you go internet shopping, you do not know how reliable your seller is. You do not know where he works, what he looks like, whether he can be trusted or whether such a company really exists. The conventional method of shopping does not give room for such doubts. The seller is there in person to persuade you to buy a product and to stand guarantee for the quality of the product.

Internet shopping also encourage credit card fraud. Since you normally have to pay through credit cards, unscrupulous people can hack into website, get access to your account number and use your credit card. You also run the risk of not getting your product even after paying for it.

The traditional method of shopping allows families to get together for an outing and enjoy a meal later on. It encourages family unity and family harmony. Internet shopping, on the other hand, can be a lonely affair. The shopper has to sit in front of a silent tube and wait for the products to flash on the screen.
In conclusion, I believe that internet shopping will not replace the traditional method of shopping.

c) An invention that has brought positive changes to our lives is the television. First, it helps us in acquiring knowledge. Many programs are of great educational value. They give lessons on geography, history, science, literature and fine arts in a pleasant and entertaining way. Watching these programs keeps us intellectually occupied. They also impart knowledge to us beyond the classroom. We use our senses of sight as well as hearing when we are watching television. That is why television is widely used in teaching in universities, colleges and schools.

Another important point is that it saves money and time. If we had to go to the cinema each day, it would cost us a lot of money. Time is also wasted in getting ready and traveling to the cinema. If we have a television set at home, we can view programs in comfort. We can also choose the programs that we like. Very often, we get live telecasts of important events. Thus, we can update our knowledge and information on world affairs.

Watching television is a healthy form of entertainment for all. To our tired parents, it offers easy relaxation. They can forget their worries when they watch a good musical program, drama or a comedy. After a few hours of serious study, nothing is more relaxing to the student than watching a television program. He would then be less tired and can study much better after that.

Finally, the television is a social asset. Members of a family sit together to watch a program. This helps to bring them together. When members of the family sit together, exchange views and comments, they are not only learning but also improving family ties. Watching television is less harmful than loitering in the streets or associating with bad company. The advantages of watching television definitely outweigh the disadvantages.

d) Zainal looked up from his work. His head was throbbing and his eyes were beginning to water. Surprised to hear the cry of a baby, he stood up and walked to his window.

He could see Siva, his neighbour’s baby in a pram under a tree just outside his house. He thought it was funny the baby being left alone. Just as he was turning away from the window, Zainal saw a strange looking woman grabbing the handle of the pram and slowly pushing the pram away.

Zainal’s eyes widened in amazement. He had never seen the woman before. She was stockily built and her face was heavily done up. Refusing to take any chances, Zainal called out to the woman from his window. “Stop....stop.....What do you think you’re doing?” But she paid no attention and continued to push the pram.

Zainal was sure she was a kidnapper. He had to save the baby from the clutches of the evil woman.

Zainal ran downstairs and dashed out of his front door. He ran after the woman waving his hands wildly, signaling her to stop.

The woman turned around and looked at Zainal in fear. She began to push the pram faster. Zainal too increased his speed determinedly. He soon caught up with the ‘kidnapper’ and grabbed her arm to make her stop.

The angry and frightened woman tried to push Zainal away and hit him several times with an umbrella.

Zainal caught hold of the umbrella and shouted at the woman, “Stop…stop…it…, you kidnapper!”

The lady stopped hitting Zainal and asked, “Who you are calling a kidnapper?”

“You….of course….Why have you taken this baby from his home?” accused Zainal.

“But this is my baby…., she is mine. I have not kidnapped anyone’s baby,” she insisted.

The word ‘liar’ was at the tip of Zainal’s tongue when the baby began to cry loudly. Zainal looked into the pram. Dumbfounded, Zainal stared at the fair roundface baby with two slits for her eyes. She certainly wasn’t Siva. She was a picture of the woman standing in front. There is no mistaking whose baby she was.

Zainal then realized how hasty and silly he had acted. He apologized to the woman and tried to explain about the confusion, but the woman glared at him angrily. His face red with embarrassment, he turned away and quickly walked back to his own house.

e) Advertising is a lucrative business. It is public promotion and deals with the publicizing of a new product, service or idea. The main purpose of advertising is to persuade consumers to purchase a product or service, while providing information about it at the same time. Another purpose is of course, to promote the new product or service in order to boost sales. In short, advertising creates demand for a product.

Advertising is mainly carried out through print and electronic media. Print media range from brochures and posters to billboards, magazines and newspapers. Electronic advertising, on the other hand, includes radio, television and the internet. It often employs the use of catchy jingles and tunes to persuade , attract and tempt the consumers.

Advertising preys on our vanity. We all desire to be admired and accepted, whether socially, physically, intellectually or professionally. We desire prestige and status, and think we can achieve it simply by using product carrying a renowned brand like Calvin Klein or Versage. Advertisements have the power to influence our thoughts and emotions, and lure us into buying a product or service we may have no need for. They are successful because we, consumers, are gullible and vulnerable to the sales gimmicks and strategies used by marketers. We succumbed easily to irresistable offers like ‘Buy one, get one free’ and ‘Free gifts’. Consequently, we end up purchasing a product or service.

Advertisements work because they usually present misleading and untruthly information to create a sense of desire for the product in a consumer. Ultimately, we have the right to choose what we do or do not want. As businesses become increasingly competitive, advertisements will become more aggressive by the day. We, therefore, need to be rational and exercise our rights as consumers and not let marketers take control of our lives through advertising.

KEY LITERARY ELEMENTS

SETTING
The setting of the novel is in La Paz, a small fishing village where Kino and his family reside. The doctor and the other people live in the town, which is located nearby. Later in the book, Kino decides to sell his pearl in the capital. He leaves his fishing village and travels north. Much of the action takes place on the beaches along the way.
LIST OF CHARACTERS
Character List
Kino
A prototypical Mexican-Indian who works as a pearl diver, he begins the story as a devoted father and husband to Coyotito and Juana, respectively. Kino is the central character of the story, a layman who finds himself becoming increasingly violent, paranoid and defiant as he faces opposition from others after he finds the pearl, and resorts to assaulting Juana and murdering those who threaten him.
Juana
The mother of Coyotito and the wife of Kino, Juana is, as her name suggests, the representation of woman for Steinbeck in the story. She dutifully supports her husband, despite his worsening treatment of her, but warns him against the dangers that the pearl can bring to the family. Juana remains steadfast throughout the story and devoted to maintaining her family. She even refuses to obey Kino when he suggests that they take separate paths to avoid the trackers.
Coyotito
The infant son of Kino and Coyotito, after he is stung by a scorpion, the doctor refuses to treat him because his parents have no money. Although Juana seemingly cures him with a seaweed poultice, he receives treatment from the doctor only after Kino finds the pearl. When Kino and Juana are hunted by trackers after escaping La Paz, one of the trackers shoots Coyotito in the head as they hide in a cave.
The Doctor
A fat, complacent man who is not from the same race as Kino and Juana, he refuses to treat Coyotito for a scorpion sting when Kino and Juana cannot pay enough. However, once he learns that Kino has found the Pearl of the World, he treats the healed Coyotito after leading Kino and Juana to believe that Coyotito may suffer unseen consequences from the bite. Seemingly interested in stealing the pearl, the doctor is not of the same race as Kino and Juana, and longs for his days in Paris.
Juan Tomas
The brother of Kino and the husband of Apolonia, he warns Kino against the disastrous consequences that he faces from finding the pearl. Juan Tomas hides Kino and Juana in his house after Kino murders a man in self-defense.
Apolonia
The fat wife of Juan Tomas, Apolonia allows Kino and Juana to hide in her house after Kino murders a man in self-defense.
Protagonist
The protagonist of the novel is Kino, the pearl diver, and the entire plot revolves around him. At the beginning of the play, Kino is described as a simple family man, content with his surroundings and wanting nothing more than a full stomach and a placid life. When the scorpion bites his son, he takes him to the doctor. The doctor's curt response and refusal to help Coyotito causes Kino to search for the pearl. He discovers the greatest pearl in the world, which seems to incur the wrath of the gods. After finding the pearl, Kino must endure continuous hazards, which leave him afraid, yet unrelenting and defiant. Although he fights the evil forces behind the pearl, he cannot overcome them. He finally loses his most precious possession, his only son to the evil forces. The novel comes full circle with Kino flinging the pearl back to the sea from where it had come. Kino's character as a tough, resilient hardy man has been beautifully depicted.
Antagonist
Kino's antagonist is the beautiful pearl, which breeds greed, envy, and evil amongst the people around Kino, who are jealous of his newfound wealth.

Climax
In chapter six, Kino and his family flee from their country to go and sell their pearl. Evil trackers, hoping to steal the pearl, follow them on their journey. Coyotito's cry reveals the presence of Kino and his family, and the trackers shoot and kill their son. Finally, Kino hurls the pearl back into the sea.
Outcome
The novel ends in tragedy. After the death of Coyotito, there is nothing left for Kino and Juana. The pearl has no value to them, for the main reason for selling it is to provide for their son. Now he is gone. The novel ends with Kino and Juana returning to their country, utterly forlorn and defeated. As the entire village follows them, the couple walks to the sea. There, Kino takes the pearl in his hand and flings it into the water, where it slowly disappears.

THEMES
Major Themes
In The Pearl, John Steinbeck show that wealth can have dire consequences as it breeds greed, envy, and evil; sometimes in the possessor of the wealth and sometimes in those who surround the wealthy. Kino's discovery of the pearl should have brought him wealth and happiness; instead, it brings ill tidings and creates vast sorrow in his life.

Minor Themes
John Steinbeck also shows man's inhumanity to his fellow man throughout the novel. The wealthy people, represented by the doctor, force the poor class of people to exist on simple food and in humble dwellings. They seize the wealth for themselves and refuse kindness or charity to those in the lower class, as evidenced by the doctor's refusal to treat Coyotito. At the same time, the wealthy trample one another as they struggle to climb the ladder to wealth and success.
MORE THEMES

1. Greed and selfishness
• The doctor refuses to treat Coyotito because he will not work for free.
• The doctor is only interested in treating Coyotito after he learns about the great pearl that Kino has discovered.
• The attackers and trackers attempt to steal the pearl from Kino
• The pearl buyers plan to cheat Kino into selling the pearl at a very low price.
2. Dreams
• When Kino finds the pearl, everyone hopes for something from it. These include:
# Kino’s plans
• Get married in church
• Buy new clothing for his family.
• Get a rifle and harpoon
• Send Coyotito to school
# Other people’s plan
• The priest thinks of repair to be made to the church
• The shopkeepers think of the goods that have not sold well.
• The doctor sees himself in Paris sitting in a restaurant waiting for a waiter to serve him wine.
• The pearl buyers hope to buy the pearl cheaply
• The villagers hope that Kino’s wealth will indirectly change their lives for the better.

3. Family Love and loyalty
• The strong bond between Kino, Juana and Coyotito is very clear. They are happy as a family.
• Juana supports Kino and the decisions he makes.
• Juan Tomas and Kino have a strong bond. When Kino is in trouble, Juan Tomas and his whole family are there to offer their help and support.
• Juana stands by Kino throughout the story especially when they try to make their way to the north.

4. Appearance versus reality
The pearl usually represents everything that is good and pure but in this story, it represents the worst of human greed. Kino believes selling the pearl will make his dreams come true. However, he finds that it becomes an evil thing as people try to steal it from him. He is forced to commit the worst evil of all, that is, killing other man. His son, Coyotito is also killed as a result. In the end, the pearl which seems to represent wealth is a source of evil. Kino also realizes that it is not as important as the real jewels – his happy family and his simple life

5. Violence
• Violence comes as a result of the various attempts to steal the pearl from Kino. It begins with a simple attempt in the brush hut and Kino hurting the attacker. It ends with Kino killing the three trackers. As man’s greed grows, so does the violence. Kino also attacks Juana , his loving wife, when she tries to get rid of the pearl.

6. Sacrifice
• Juana is willing to throw the pearl into the sea in order to bring peace back to her home and keep her family safe.
• Kino offers to lead the trackers away so that Juana and Coyotito will be safe.
• Kino throws away the pearl and his dreams in the end, in order to become once again the kind, simple man he was in the beginning.

THE PEARL'S TIPS

1. Response must be relevant to the task. Give clear identification of the character/ moral lesson/ event, etc as required by the question.
2. Points must be with evidence from the text.
3. Points must be expressed clearly and well organized.
4. DON’T WRITE A SUMMARY!
5. The use of tenses must be consistent throughout the answer. Stick to present tense or past tense only.

SPM 2001

1. Which character do you like the best in the novel you have studied? Give three reasons why you like the character to support your answer. (15 MARKS)

The question requires you to give a personal response to the story:
1. Identify the CHARACTER.
2. Give THREE reasons why you like the character, referring to the events, etc. in the story to support your point.

SAMPLE ANSWER.

I like Juana in The Pearl because she is a strong resilient character. When we first meet her, she seems quiet and submissive, a traditional wife and mother whose main duty is to look after her husband and child, prepares their meals and keeps house. However when there is a crisis in their lives, it is Juana who appears strong and in control. When a scorpion stings Coyotito, Juana finds the puncture mark and sucks out the poison, while Kino is “helpless” and “in the way”. Juana is “patient, “fragile”, ”obedient” and “respectful” as stated in the novel. She has “iron” in her, that is she has great inner strength. She may seem fragile but she is like “a strong man” in the canoe, and therefore, can even help Kino in his work as a pearl diver.
It is Juana who decides that the doctor must treat Coyotito. Being a traditional housewife in a poor village where the people have been oppressed for centuries has not made her too timid. She goes against tradition when she has to. She dares to voice up her wish to have the doctor coming to her house to treat her son. She does not give up when her husband helplessly delivers the news that the doctor refuses to come to her house. She decides that if the doctor will not come to them, they will go to him.
Juana recognizes the negative influence of the pearl, and knows it is a threat to their contented family life. She wants Kino to get rid of the pearl, but Kino considers the pearl the answer to all their dreams. Juana does not believe this. She decides she will throw the pearl back into the sea, even if this will anger Kino.
It is also Juana’s good sense that guides Kino. She makes him see that they must flee the village after Kino kills an intruder. She is not afraid to go with him to the mountains. She stays with him although he is cruel to her, striking her brutally when she tries to get rid of the pearl. She is patient, supportive and loyal to Kino throughout. She does not blame him when the baby is killed. Juana is strong not only for herself, but also for her husband.
I like Juana for all these qualities – her strength, courage, determination and perseverance, as well as her loyalty to and lasting love for Kino.

SPM 2002

1. Write a detailed account of an event in the novel you have chosen which teaches you an important moral lesson. In your account you must make clear what the moral lesson is.

The question requires you to know the story well enough to give specific information.
1. State the moral lesson.
2. Identify the event that is relevant to the moral lesson and elaborate on it, referring to the details in the novel.

Sample answer.

The moral lesson that I have learnt from the novel The Pearl is that I must be brave enough to do the right thing even if others disapprove or if the people I am trying to help become angry with me. Juana pleads with Kino to get rid of the pearl but he refuses, and this drives her to do it herself, although she knows he will be angry with her.
This value can be seen in chapter five when Juana tries to stealthily throw away the pearl back into the sea. She wakes up early in the morning, braving herself to walk in the dark and even running away when chased by Kino. As she was about to flung the pearl into the sea, Kino wrenches the pearl from her hand and hits her. Apart from that he also kicks her brutally. He then leaves her lying in pain on the beach.
I am sure that Juana knows Kino well enough for they have been married for some time. She must have known Kino’s personality traits and realizes how emotional he could be when it comes to the pearl. But she is wise and is not a coward. She takes the risk and is very brave in trying to throw away the pearl as she does it for her family sake even though Kino disagrees with her action.

SPM 2003

1. Which character do you sympathise with in the novel you have studied? Explain why you sympathise with this character. Support your answer with evidence from the text.

The question requires you to give a personal response to the story, specifically, to a character you most sympathized with.
1. Identify the character.
2. Explain why you sympathized with him or her, referring to the event, etc, in the story to support your points.

SAMPLE ANSWER.

The character that I sympathized with in the novel The Pearl is Coyotito.
He is Kino’s and Juana’s only son. I sympathized with him due to a few bad things that have happened to him.
Firstly, he is stung by a scorpion. He is still a baby yet he has to endure the pain from the scorpion’s poison. He screams and cries in pain after he is stung by the scorpion till all the neighbours hear him and come to Kino’s house. Even though Juana tries to suck out the poison, he is not cured straight away.
I also sympathized with him when the doctor refuses to treat him. Under normal circumstances any normal doctor would have treated an adorable baby but Coyotito is not that lucky. He is denied the right to be treated by a doctor even when his life is at stake simply because his father is poor.
Next, I also pity Coyotito when Kino and Juana take him along with them when they go to the sea. A sick baby’s place is at home but Coyotito is taken to the sea and he has to bear the hot temperature and danger even though he is still small and sick.
Finally, I sympathized with Coyotito as he has to endure the dangerous and difficult journey to the city. His family has to run to the mountain to save themselves from the cruel trackers. There he is accidentally shot and killed.
As a small baby he has endured and gone through unnecessary difficulties when he should be living happily with his family. That is why I sympathized with Coyotito. Life has not been fair to him.

SPM 2004

1. Choose an event in the novel you have studied which you find to be the most memorable. Give reasons for your choice and with close reference to the text, discuss the event.

The question requires you to give a personal response to the story, specifically, to an event you find most memorable.
1. Identify the event.
2. Explain why you choose the event and elaborate on the event, referring to the details in the novel.

SAMPLE ANSWER

The event that I consider the most memorable in the novel The Pearl is the point when the baby, Coyotito is killed.
Kino and his wife are being pursued by the trackers, who are after their pearl. That pearl has become the most important thing in Kino’s life. He has even struck his beloved wife in anger because of it. If he had surrendered the pearl, his family’s life would not be in peril’ but he said “This pearl has become my soul. If I give it up I lose my soul”.
And now the trackers are close to his trail. He can see them from the cave where he hides his family. Finally, he decides that he has no choice but to attack the trackers while they are resting. It is either to kill or be killed. He creeps up on them stealthily, but just he is about to leap out, he hears his baby cry. The trackers actually think it is just a coyote and yet one of the trackers fires casually in the direction of the sound. At that moment Kino attacks. After fierce fighting, Kino is able to kill all three men. But when he sees that they are all dead, he hears the sound of Juana’s keening wail, the cry of death.
This scene is riveting because the suspense has been building up – will Kino be killed, or will he manage to kill the trackers? Then, when the baby cries, this adds another question mark to end the result. And then there is utter horror at the knowledge of the baby’s death.
The event is also important because it causes a complete turnaround for Kino. The pearl no longer has a hold on him. In fact he throws it back into the sea.

SPM 2005

‘Love is important in a family’. How is this shown in the novel you have read? Support your answer with close reference to the text.

The question requires you to give a personal response to the story, specifically, to the theme of love.
1. State that the novel shows how love is important in a family.
2. Relate the events to how love is shown.

SAMPLE ANSWER

The novel The Pearl shows me the importance of love when trying to survive in a cruel and wicked world. When Coyotito was stung by the scorpion we could see that Kino and Juana’s actions were propelled by their love and sustained by courage. First, in spite of the danger to himself, Kino tried to catch the scorpion with his bare hands. He then crushed the scorpion between his hands and stamped on it. As for Juana, she bravely sucked out the poison from the wound knowing fully well the action could endanger her life. They also endured the humiliation to beg the doctor to treat their sick child. These were all done out of love for their son.
When things went even more wrong, with the people trying to cheat them, and the trackers going after them, the couple’s actions and decisions were again based on their love for each other, supported by courage and sustained by patience. When Kino hit Juana in a rage, she patiently bore it. She was not swayed in her devotion to him. Her thoughts were for him and not for herself. When the trackers were closing in on them, Kino wanted to lead the trackers away, bravely sacrificing himself so his family could escape. In response, Juana, in her love for him, refuses to let him make this sacrifice. It took real courage for the woman to be willing to face the evil trackers. Then when the child was killed, the couple needed love to go living as heroes in the face of adversity.
In conclusion, The Pearl shows me the importance of love in facing life obstacles.

The question requires you to:

2. Provide examples of the character’s determination using textual evidence from the text.
3. Explain how the determination affects the family.
All these must be tied up to show the link between the determination and the effects on the family.

SAMPLE ANSWER.

The main character in The Pearl is Juana. She is described as a very determined person. Firstly, Juana’s determination is shown when she insists on bringing Coyotito to see the doctor although she knows the doctor would not come to the brush house.
She believes that Coyotito must be treated by the doctor to save his life. Although she knows that the doctor’s race looks down upon her race and treats them as if they are simple animals. She sacrifices her pride by going to the doctor’s house. Kino is amazed at her strong determination.
Secondly, Juana is determined to get rid of the pearl. She believes that the pearl is evil. Juana tries to throw the pearl back into the sea when Kino is asleep. When Kino finds her, he wrenches the pearl from her hand. Then, he punches and kicks her in rage. Juana’s determination to destroy the pearl has turned Kino into a violent husband.
Thirdly, when the trackers are closing in on them, Kino wants to lead the trackers away in order to save his family. However Juana is determined to stay with Kino no matter what happens. It takes real determination and courage to be willing to face the cruel trackers.
In conclusion, Juana’s determination contributes to the family survival against hardship and challenges that they face in life.

SPM 2007

1. ‘It is important to have a person you look up to in your life’. From the novel you have read, write about one character that you look up to. Give reasons why you choose him / her.

The question requires you to give a personal response to the story.
1. Identify the character.
2. Explain why you choose him / her referring to the events, etc. in the story to support your points.

SAMPLE ANSWER

The character that I look up to in the novel The Pearl is Juana. She is strong and courageous. From Juana I learn that it is wise to look beyond appearances and feelings.
Kino is spellbound by the pearl he finds and soon cannot be parted from it. Juana however, can see the powerful influence of the pearl upon Kino, and she is afraid because it is a negative influence.
Juana also encourages me to be brave enough to do the right thing although it may anger the person I am trying to help. When Kino refuses to listen to Juana’s pleas to throw the pearl back into the sea, she takes matters into her own hands and tries to throw the pearl back into the sea herself. She also does not give up on Kino, but helps him by following him. This show of support gives Kino strength at a time when his life is falling apart.
Juana also shows me the value of patience and loyalty. She is patient with Kino although he will not listen to her good advice. He is even violent and brutal with her, but she forgives him and remains patient. She trusts in her own judgment, but she is loyal to her husband. She advises him to flee when he kills a man. Kino learns from her determination to keep the family together. Although they lose their baby in the end, he is finally able to choose rightly – family over the promises of the pearl –
